In the western world complete nutritional deficiency is rare in those who have a reasonable diet but certain nutrients can become deficient as we age due to poor absorption, loss of protective hormones, serial dieting and normal reduction in efficiency of our digestive system.

Anyone who has a balanced diet of plenty of vegetables, fruit, lean protein and moderate dairy has made a good start towards receiving adequate nutrition but there are a number of causes for a deficiency that become evident from early childhood.

Risk factors for calcium deficiency.

If a mother does not have a balanced diet of green leafy vegetables, fruit such as oranges and apricots and some dairy during pregnancy containing sufficient calcium, there is a risk of the foetus suffering from a lack of development and growth.
